Overview
5-Amino-1MQ is a small-molecule quaternary quinolinium that inhibits nicotinamide N-methyltransferase. It is not a peptide, and it is listed in the metabolic group because NNMT sits at the junction of methylation capacity and NAD+ salvage — the enzyme consumes both nicotinamide and the methyl donor SAM.
That dual consumption is what makes the inhibitor useful. Blocking NNMT raises intracellular nicotinamide available for the NAD+ salvage pathway while sparing SAM, so the compound is used to probe both arms in the same preparation rather than manipulating each separately.

Inhibiting NNMT spares nicotinamide for salvage to NAD+, making the compound a tool for raising cellular NAD+ without exogenous precursor loading.
NNMT is highly expressed in adipose tissue, and inhibition is studied for its effects on adipocyte energy expenditure and differentiation.
Because NNMT consumes SAM, inhibition changes methyl donor availability, connecting the compound to broader methylation research.
Handling
Reconstitute with sterile or bacteriostatic water added slowly against the inner wall of the vial. Allow the cake to dissolve without agitation, swirling gently if required. Do not vortex or shake.
Lyophilised at −20 °C, desiccated and protected from light, stable for at least 24 months. Reconstituted and held at 2–8 °C, use within 28 days. Avoid repeated freeze-thaw.
